Beaver Student-Athlete Sick With COVID-19

Editor’s Note: The Beaver Area School District has released the following statement about one of its student-athletes who tested positive for COVID-19 after becoming symptomatic. We are publishing it in full as written.

This morning, Sunday, August 2, 2020, the administration was notified that one of our student-athletes tested positive for COVID19.

Since receiving this information, we have begun the process of notifying the coaches and parents of players that may have come in contact with this student-athlete during the time frame provided to us. While we cannot determine all contacts, we have been able to determine multiple first-person contacts between this individual and other teams at the Middle and High School levels, including both boys and girls teams, and secondary-contacts with coaches and players of other district and community teams. Determining all contacts is not possible given the myriad community interactions that players have with each other off the field.

We have been in contact with the PA Department of Health, which will be assisting us with notification and engaging in the difficult work of contract tracing. Additionally, if any recommendations from the PA Department of Health are given to the District, those recommendations will be shared with you and added to our guidelines for safe practice and participation.

Effectively immediately, out of an abundance of caution, we will be canceling all extracurricular activities for three (3) days so that we can appropriately clean shared equipment, used facilities, and common spaces. All extracurricular activities and sports not directly affected may resume activity on August 6, 2020. Middle/High School boys and girls soccer may resume on August 17, 2020.

Please know that we are making every effort to keep the Beaver Area students safe and to mitigate the risk of contracting COVID19. You can help us with these efforts by monitoring your child’s health and communicating with your family physician when symptoms necessitate additional scrutiny.
